Florence Scovel Shinn was born in Camden, New Jersey, and studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, where she met her future husband, Everett Shinn, a prominent American artist.
The couple moved to New York City and pursued careers in the arts. Florence became a successful book and magazine illustrator, bringing the same warmth, humour, and imagination found in her artwork to her later spiritual teachings. She and Everett divorced in 1912 due to Everett's affair with a young actress.
Shinn went on to become one of the most distinctive voices in the New Thought movement. She taught that our words, beliefs, and expectations help shape our experiences, and that faith, intuition, and affirmations can impress new patterns of success upon the subconscious mind.
In 1925, she self-published her first and most famous book, The Game of Life and How to Play It. Filled with memorable stories and practical affirmations, it presents life as a spiritual game governed by laws of faith, expectancy, love, and the creative power of the spoken word.
Her conversational style, lively examples, and reassuring message made complex spiritual principles easy to understand. Her books remain New Thought classics and later influenced prominent teachers, including Louise Hay.
