Thomas Troward was a British judge, philosopher, and one of the most influential thinkers in the early New Thought movement. He spent many years in British-administered India, where he served as an assistant commissioner and divisional judge in the Punjab.
Following his retirement from the judiciary, Troward devoted himself to the study of comparative religion, spiritual law, and the creative power of the mind. He approached metaphysical ideas with the careful reasoning of a judge, seeking to explain spiritual principles through logic rather than doctrine.
His best-known work, The Edinburgh Lectures on Mental Science, explores the relationship between individual thought and the universal creative mind. His writings profoundly influenced Ernest Holmes, Napoleon Hill, Emmet Fox, and many other spiritual and self-development teachers.
Geneviève Behrend is widely described as Troward’s only personal student. She studied with him for approximately two years before sharing his principles with a wider audience through her own books and lectures.
Although Troward’s writing can be more philosophical than that of many New Thought authors, his central message is remarkably practical: when we understand the laws of mind and consciously direct our thoughts, we become active participants in shaping our lives. His ideas also received renewed attention when he was acknowledged as an inspiration behind the 2006 film The Secret.
“Having seen and felt the end, you have willed the means to the realization of the end.”
