Prentice Mulford

Prentice Mulford was born in Sag Harbor, Long Island, and became one of the earliest and most original voices of the New Thought movement.

At the age of 22, he sailed to California, where he spent the next 16 years pursuing a remarkably varied life. He searched for gold and other minerals in mining towns and worked at different times as a miner, cook, schoolteacher, journalist, and humorous writer. These experiences gave him a keen understanding of human nature and later inspired both his entertaining stories and spiritual philosophy.

Mulford wrote extensively about the creative power of thought in works such as Thoughts Are Things, Your Forces and How to Use Them, and Gift of the Spirit. Although he did not originate the phrase “law of attraction,” he was one of the first writers to develop it into a broad principle for health, success, relationships, and everyday life.

Mulford died peacefully at the age of 57 while alone in a boat near Long Island. Fittingly, the memorial later placed on his grave bears the words most closely associated with his teachings: “Thoughts are things.”
