Elizabeth Towne was an American writer, editor, publisher, and one of the most influential women in the early New Thought movement. After leaving behind her Methodist upbringing, she devoted her life to exploring the power of the mind and helping others create happier, healthier, and more successful lives.
In 1898, she founded The Nautilus, an influential New Thought magazine that she continued publishing for more than 50 years. Through the Elizabeth Towne Company, she also brought the work of writers such as Wallace D. Wattles, William Walker Atkinson, and Orison Swett Marden to a wider audience.
Towne was a prolific and refreshingly practical writer. Her books, including How to Grow Success, Just How to Wake the Solar Plexus, and Happiness and Marriage, explore positive thinking, mental imagery, affirmations, relationships, and the intelligent direction of personal energy.
Her influence extended well beyond publishing. Towne served as president of the International New Thought Alliance in 1924 and later became the first woman elected to Holyoke’s board of aldermen. She even ran for mayor; an unusually bold step for a woman of her time.
More than a century later, Towne’s ideas continue to resonate. The title page of her 1906 book The Life Power and How to Use It appears in the opening sequence of the film The Secret, offering a fitting reminder of her place among the early pioneers of modern manifestation and self-development teachings.
