Wallace D. Wattles

Wallace D. Wattles was an American author and pioneer of the New Thought movement whose ideas helped shape modern teachings about prosperity, creative thought, and the Law of Attraction.

His most famous book, The Science of Getting Rich, was published by the Elizabeth Towne Company in 1910. Rather than presenting wealth as something gained at another person’s expense, Wattles encouraged readers to create greater value and live by what he called “the Certain Way”—combining a clear mental vision with gratitude, faith, and purposeful action.

Wattles believed that thought alone was not enough. His method emphasized taking effective action in the present while holding firmly to the vision of the life you wish to create. He expanded these principles beyond money in The Science of Being Well and The Science of Being Great, forming a trilogy devoted to wealth, health, and personal development.

Interestingly, Wattles was also involved in Christian socialism and sought public office, reflecting his belief that individual prosperity and social progress could exist together. Although he died in 1911 at the age of 51, his ideas reached an enormous new audience nearly a century later when The Science of Getting Rich inspired Rhonda Byrne to create the bestselling book and film The Secret.

Today, Wattles remains best known for his practical and enduring message: form a clear vision, cultivate gratitude, act with purpose, and seek success through creation rather than competition.
